Growing up in Washington Heights, you always saw a domino game going on somewhere on the corner, shady characters hiding in corners, cops on the prowl likes sharks, and the piraguero (frio-frio for my Dominicans) not far behind cooling us all down. Shoutout to Taveras Grocery on the corner of 163rd street and St. Nicholas Ave., the inspiration behind this memory of my childhood.
